I had a question aboout molding rocks with alginate. Can I just put them in a bed of sand and pour alginate over them then use that mold and make a casting out of plaster or something else liek that plastic or whatever? Any tips on making some fake rocks would be good. And I tried making some by mixing urethane and cotton and putting it in hot water and they didnt turn out so good maybe I was ising the wrong cotton or something I just use cotton balls pulled apart and the rocks looked liek big fluffy cotton balls stuck together. Any tips on that would be good too. Thanks for any help, Kevin

Two places I know of for making rocks. Breakthrough Habitat and Exhibit manual, great book to much excellent information in it. McKenzie Creating Rock Bases and Natural Habitats video, most of the video is showing their rocks but does have a good section on creating your own rocks On my web their is one set of rocks I made, another one will be on it as soon as I get my act together and get the photo to the web master.

This is the way I did one. It was the cheapest too. I went to a Craft store like A C Moore or Michael's and got some LATEX RUBBER. It was around $10 I think. I then took the rock I was molding and sealed it by spraying it with a coat of clear paint/shelaq or whatever is cheapest at Wal-Mart. Then with a brush I painted the rock with the latex rubber being sure to get in all the nooks and crannys. Letting it dry in between coats I did this 4 times. Then with the 4th coat still wet I used some gauze out of the 1st aid kit and stuck it to the rock. Put another coat of latex on. let dry then put 2 more coats on. after the last drys sprinkle some baby powder on it so it won't stick to itself. This took like two days to do and sounds like a lot of trouble as I type, but it is worth it. I spray the inside with Pam cooking spray then pour urathane foam in it and BOOM...a perfect rock. then you will have to paint it. It should last for years too.
