Just trying to find out what you all like to use when making a habitat or base.

I use artificial plants when I can find good ones.I do also use some real ones. The base on this mount uses all artificial plants.Even the stump is fake.It was built using ,chicken wire, burlap, plaster, then mache over that for the surface texture. It is hollow and much lighter than a real one.No bug issues either. It also allows the leg rod nuts to be removed and the bear can come off if it ever needs to,for moving etc..This habitat was built to match photos the customer had of the are where the bear was taken.

The bear is great, I am really impressed with the stump. I would like to make one like that.

I use both, depends on the application. I use real rice stubble and corn stalks for waterfowl but will use quality fakes when needed. I make a trip thru the arts/crafts depts in WalMart, Michaels, Hobby Lobby, etc to check out what they might have. Some places have seasonal stuff that may be marked down after season. If I have to order habitat stuff I order from Al Holmes or places I have seen at WTC or NTA and know what kind of quality they carry.
jimb, the bear is good but the stump is awesome. I do a good job on rocks and ledges but haven't tried a stump. Did you have a real stump for reference or photos?

I didn't have any stump reference ,though that really would be the best way to do it.I did have the customer's kill photos that showed some of the old burn where he took it.I used the standing burned timber as reference to paint the stump, using thin washes of tube acrylics-brown,black and sienna.I textured the mache with a coarse brush, mostly pulling upward. Here's a closer picture.
