How much of a back log in your freezer justifies the cost of sending your capes out to a tannery? I have never sent anything out but I have a low volume of work right now as I am just getting started,

I don't know if it has as much to do with back log as wanting to tan yourself or not. We tan for guys that do one or two heads a year. Problem starting out is most people cant wait the time it takes to get a quality tan back from a tannery. For me when I had our full time taxidermy shop in the 80s , I started sending out hides when it seemed like I was doing more tanning than taxidermy. As for the cost of sending capes out, if you are doing the work for someone else always figure the cost of tanning in your price like you would be sending to tannery weather you tan yourself or not. That way if you have to send out sometime its covered in your price.

My rule was allways, When the freezer gets full (I only had one) I sent all raw capes and hides to a fur dresser. They would turn, flesh and salt them for a small fee. It gave me more freezer space and I had the option to send them out to the tannery. Fishslayer is dead on! Weather or not you tan in house. You must charge for tanning just in case.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Two guys went out to go hunting to fill their tags and freezer when they both noticed some big tracks, as they continued on one notice something that smelled like a dead skunk, as the two continued to hunt one of them spotted what looked like a 180 class booner buck he told his friend, hey al look at the size of that bucks rack and his friend al replied yea are you going to take him, yes he said, just about that time they smelled that smell they had encountered before but it was close, well al and his friend jim decided it's now or never to take this buck so jim raised his gun and BANG hit the buck right behind the shoulder, al told him nice shot. Two hours later al saw a big buck he took out his new .54 caliber black powder rifle and put the big buck in the cross hairs and KABOOM when he walked up to the buck it was the same one jim shoot so all being a decent guy told jim, jim was mad at first but said there will be another just then a deer the size of a moose came crashing thru the woods but something was different he was in hunting clothing just then POP, AL AL AL! are you alright no he got me well i'm going to get him BANG click BANG i got him al but i think he got me. Wait a minute did you just fart thats what the smells been man you stink. At least we are still alive, not if you keep that up.
