Michael, hear me out on this. You are clearly an ambitious young man with big dreams and a passion for taxidermy.
You did a great job building this forum, people clearly like the format and ability to post links and pictures. If you manage this board well you will win respect from other taxidermists and you will help the industry as a whole which is good for all of us.
By touting your web site on your board you open yourself up for comments. Mike, you are a beginner taxidermist who should not be doing most customer work yet. Your home page says you only mount squirrels, skulls, etc.. That is fine for the level you are at. Later on you have a full price list where you are trying to get industry standard prices for amateur quality work.
The deer on your web site are simply not $300. mounts. It is also obvious you have never touched most of the animals you advertise prices for. This is disturbing because it hurts the taxidermy industry which hurts all of us. The reason most people dread finding an auto mechanic is that a select few are unethical.
You have over 100 members here. Not one of whom has produced commercial quality work with his or her first few mounts. Everybody started where you are, and probably half the people here are beginners seeking guidance.
My long winded point is don't try to pass yourself off as someone you are not. This will only hurt you down the road. Instead of building web sites get some critters and start practicing. Since you are profit minded, I would suggest learning whitetails first, as they are the most popular game animal. This board is the best asset you have for learning. You made it, so use it.
Hone your skills and the work will follow. I started out as a hobbyist and only began taking customer work after numerous people asked me to. I do not take fish because I haven't done enough of them to be good at it. When I feel my fish work is above average, I will accept them. I turn away as much work dollar wise as I take in every year. I have never advertised. People come to me and return again because of my attitude.
Good luck, and get practicing, Chris
