I know I am probably going to sound stupid asking this, but I am just wondering if using a speed septum is required when doing a whitetail shoulder mount. I am just getting into taxidermy and plan on doing my first deer this year. I bought a Dan Rinehart video to start me off and in this video Dan used a speed septum on his deer form. What im not sure of is if this is just for a competition mount or if all taxidermist do this for this for their customers or if anyone even uses this. Thanks to everyone who helps me out with this. *Mikey*

In my opinion there is no "stupid question' We ALL were new at one time. Plus we ALL should still be learning even if you have been doing it for 20 years.
No you do not "HAVE" to use them. I didn't use them in my 1st three, Then I tried it. I liked it. I use them on all of mine now. You can also make them out of milk jugs. I bought the kit from McKenzies, The tool that comes with it is pretty cool.

Ok, Thanks For the help. Heres another for you though in this video Dan also used just a dremel and dug out the nose holes. The only thing is he went all the way through each side so you could see stright through the form, and then he put the septum in. So if I am not going to be using one then I not go all the way through the form when making the nostrils. Thanks

Right, I have never used a dremel tool to dig out the nose. You will usually take too much out. I use a lip tucking tool to dig and shape the nostril. Very important to use a good reference. Only go all the way through if you are useing a septum.....But if you accidently do it anyway just fix it with apoxi-sculp.

Mikey, I know a older taxidermist that has since stopped doing taxidermy for health reasons he never used septums and he won quite a bit more blue ribbons than the septum guys. i don't use them on any of my deer mounts.
