I was just wondering if any of you more expierenced taxidermists have any little tricks that you have learned that could help or anything like household items that would make it easier for those of us who are new to this. Thanks to anyone who replies.

Used dryer sheets for fin repair on fish. Also when I cast a trout head I cut cardboard to fit the gill opening, then cut little slits in the outside edge. Frey them out paint them red and it looks just like the real deal.

Oh where to start. salinometer broken or lost? A fresh egg will float half above and half below the water at 40% salt. Dust mounts with boric acid roach killer to keep moths and other bugs off them. A 16oz salt canister with the top cut off. filled to the top will hold 18oz of salt. (Try it if you don't belive me) Elmers white school glue can be used to replace modge podge in a pinch. A welders wire brush makes one hellava form scratcher. Lacquer thinner can be used to soften up ear liners to alter them or make them simple to cut and trim. A "sticker" pet grooming comb works great for grooming mounts.
More later!

how about, grapefruit knife from walmart makes a great fish skinning knife. tube of 88 cent latex caulk 4 ounces elmers white glue and a splash of rittles prezerves it makes a decent inexpensive hide paste that works well with everything except dp'd hides, make fish head molds with regular silicone caulk instead of expensive rtv {good for fish heads but takes a good day and a half to dry so sometimes gets a little smelly lol} thin the first coat with mineral spirits or even laquer thinner

This is a good post. I hope it grows.
I cut out lilly pad top from paper bags and paint them. Table spoon makes a great fish flesher.

good tricks...here's one of mine.
Apply some regular hand lotion around the eyes on gameheads, and on the nose, and shrinkage won't be so bad. Continue with fresh lotion until mount dries. It works!
