Here is how I finish all my deer. I take an airbrush and paint the inner ear a light fleshy color. Not pink. Look at a reference photo if you need to, it always helps. Usually I get a big mess of hide paste and dried clay around the eyes and mouth, so I take a toothbrush and some soapy lukewarm water and brush all the dried clay off the eyes, then clean the rest with a damp rag. I take some Magic Sculpt and fill in any gaps between the eyes and the skin. I let it dry over night. I use Mod Podge to recreate the little nodules on the nose pad, and all you do is take a little paint brush and take you time with it. After all this I just let the mount dry overnite, and then the next day I will do my finishing details around the eyes and follow up with a little more Mod Podge on the nose. Hope this helps.

Was it DP or Tanned. I would re-hydrate the mouth, see if you could get it tucked a little better. dramel out the nostrils, then use some apoxie sculpt to re work those areas. I would possibly do the same with the eyes, depending how it goes. They seem a little too "wide open". you can show all kinds of the deers emotion with the eyes, like angry, scared, curious etc. Just tinker around.
I am in no way shape or form an expert........just my opinion

Sorry, I wouldn't finish it. If I wanted to show that to my customers I would remount it. If I wanted to show it as is, just to let people know it was my first I would finish like any other deer. Are you just looking for finishing ideas or do you want to make the deer look better?

Michael, I'm sorry but i agree with jrosbor. I can see that you need a good bit of practice yet, not trying to be cruel but helpful, the earbutts are shaped wrong and set too low, the tear ducts look way out of place at least as far as I can tell from the pic. the lips show, nose looks like it wasnt fleshed thin enough. the list could go on. I think you would be better served studying reference, I mean really looking at specifics, getting a good video or instructor another cape and start again. just trying to help if i told you it looked good you wouldnt try to improve it, hope you dont take this the wrong way and feel free to email or pm me for any specifics you might ned help with, Derek

Cut the antlers off and make a hat rack! Then start over and study your reference photos.

Michael, respectfully, the replies you received show the need for a beginner's forum on your board. I hope you would consider this so people can stop doing the "apology dance" while offering help.
As for the mount, if you want it to look nice, buy another cape and start over. If you want to show it to customers as your first mount, or keep it as your first mount for sentimental reasons, that's great. Just be sure to follow the advice of the previous posters on your next few deer so you can show how much you've improved when you start charging money for deer heads.
Good luck, love the forum by the way!
Chris

I think you can fix em, just cut the ears off and use 5 min. epoxy and move them up about 3 " closer to the rack. Cut some hair off the back and super glue it to the holes where the ears were. Spray paint the entire mount dark brown, clean eyes and use a black sharpie on the nose, please post a picture when you get him done.

I dont think I can find anything wrong with it I really like the ears set down on the back of his neck that gives it that streamlined competition look.I wish mine looked that natural and life-like.

I can not believe that you would disgrace one of my glorious creatures by immortalizing him in such a horrible mount. You suck as a taxidermist. You should try professional wrasslin'!
